Fluid Rails Docs on OSX

If you’re developing with Ruby on Rails, it’s vital to have quick and easy access to the documentation. There’s a couple good alternatives here.
NoobKit
NoobKit is bar none the best Rails documentation site out there. Easily searchable, and beautifully styled. It is made even better by using a site specific browser.
I generated this application from a slick little tool called Fluid, which creates a Mac OSX Cocoa wrapper application around Safari for one specific website. The generated appication is a complete standalone Mac OS X application with its own Dock icon, preferences, and auto-update capabilities.
This will come in really handy for your quick Rails reference needs, without having to pollute your main browser.
RailsBrain
So what do you do when you aren’t online? That’s where RailsBrain comes in.
You’ll also need to grab the zipped html files:
- Download RailsBrain.zip and unzip
- Rename the resulting “doc” folder to RailsBrain. Then move it into /Developer/Documentation. You should then be able to access /Developer/Documentation/RailsBrain/index.html directly from any of your web browsers
If you want to put the RailsBrain files somewhere else, no problem. Just right click on RailsBrain.app, and “Show Package Contents”. Go into Contents -> Resources and open up Config.plist. Edit the URL string to match the correct location.

If so, head on over to Prism for a similar feature. It’s not as slick or pretty at Fluid, but it gets the job done the same.
Any chance at getting something like this for Linux?
Does this work on Tiger? It just launches the icon in the dock and then disappears on my mac. Does it need anything else?

Q. Can I somehow redistribute SSBs I create with Fluid to friends/coworkers?
A. Actually, I'd very much prefer you didn't do that. I'm providing Fluid as free software, and I would like as much exposure for the product as I can get. Please direct your friends/coworkers to the Fluid website and ask them to download it themselves and try it out.
I too am using GotAPI with Fluid. GotAPI has the advantage of not only having Rails docs, but Ruby, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Prototype, MySQL, etc. It's awesome with Fluid, since you can have all that in one "doc" or "reference" app.
GotAPI is pretty cool, its just the interface could use some sprucing up. I like my documentation text large and readable. And the RDoc formatting is pretty attrocious, I like to avoid it when I can.
David... I had read the FAQ and was aware of that. Distributing a generated sample app is a nice little gateway drug to get people used to Single Site Browsers (which I'm a huge proponent of). Once they use this for a few weeks, they'll be generating their own SSBs for Basecamp, Backpack, Lighthouse and more (all of which I use). Telling people to go download Fluid and generate the apps is much less effective if they've never used an application and don't know what the benefit is.
Plus, it took some hacking around the .app folders to get the icons looking correctly in the dock (with transparency). Figured I'd save everyone the trouble.

CodeOfficer... no prob. That just means your docs arent installed locally.
Download the RailsBrain.zip docs again, and then unzip them to /Developer/Documentation/RailsBrain/

Hi jacques, Todd here, the developer of Fluid. Thanks for the Fluid love, and for the record, I don't mind you redistributing these SSBs at all. I'm glad you found Fluid useful, and grateful for the traffic you've provided my app. Also, I'll be changing my tune (in a big way) regarding redistribution of Fluid SSBs in the near future so stay tuned. peaceout.
An issue with NoobKit in Fluid is that you can't login with OpenID, since that involves redirecting to an external URL.
Henrik, check out this page: http://www.fluidapp.com/features to see how you can allow certain (or all) urls, which would enable OpenID support. However, NoobKit will first need to be updated (NoobKit > Check for Updates...) as this is a new feature.
Mabye jacques could update the downloads to the newest version :)
